The best sushi restaurant in Ventura County!
Why? Their fish is always fresh. My indicator fish--salmon and yellowtail are great. Unlike other sushi joints, their salmon has distinct stripes of fat and creamy orange flesh. Also, their yellowtail is not "fishy" in a bad way (you know how yellowtail has rather distinct flavor compared to other types of fish).
Not only is their fish fresh (biggest reason for going there), another factor is the integrity of the food and presentation. Food is carefully presented, not just slapped on the plate like other joints I've been to. Order the agedashi tofu and you get not only the tofu itself, but edible garnishments, typical of the way traditional Japanese cuisine presents itself.
Sometimes they add shiso to their miso soup. That shows extra care when making something as basic as that. In addition, try their rice separate. It's not too sticky, like other restaurants make it. It's just perfectly cooked. Also, their ponzu is quite different from other places. It doesn't have that sodium-y aftertaste to it.
Happy eating, everyone!... Reviewed by Hellen B.
If you're having casual lunch with a good friend or if you're having an important business lunch, this is the place to go. Serving traditional bentos, Hamayu provides top quality food with a friendly staff. The atmosphere is very airy and welcoming. Highly recommended for Japanese food….
